While pulp and paper and petrochemical workers are suffering
significant jobs losses across Canada, you would never know it in
Fort McMurray, Alberta.
There’s lots of work and good money, too. The average Fort
McMurray family has an annual income of $93,000, thanks an
estimated 180 billion barrels of oil waiting to be extracted from
the tar sands.
Companies are on the hunt for thousands of skilled workers as the oil sands region
around Fort McMurray is in the midst of one of the greatest booms our country has
every seen. They’re looking for construction and maintenance trades (millwrights,
carpenters, electricians, instrument mechanics), quality assurance technicians,
engineers (process, chemical, mining, electrical), draftspersons, heavy equipment
operators, planners, supervisors, riggers and administration (clerical, warehouse)
workers.
Its estimated that $45 billion dollars will be invested in new oil sands projects over the
next seven years. The population of 61,000 in Fort McMurray is expected to nearly
double in that same period.
One of the largest employers is Suncor, which employs more than 1,800 CEP
members, who belong to Local 707.
