FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 12, 2004 3rd Annual Union Tournament a hit for Charity

The third annual CEP Manitoba Spina Bifida Charity Golf Tournament raised in excess of $7,800 yesterday to help raise awareness for combating Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

Union members, management employees from CEP shops and friends played in brilliant sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures at La Salle’s Kingswood Golf and Country Club to educate people about Spina Bifida. More than 90 golfers burned through the course (and burned a few forearms) to raise money through registration fees, prize holes and sponsorship of holes. The Manitoba tournaments have raised more than $25,000 since their inception two years ago. CEP Golf Tournaments have raised more than $45,000 nationally for Spina Bifida this year alone.

CEP and Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Canada (SBHAC) would like to thank all who supported and participated in the tournament, including the CEP Locals, National officers and staff, companies, and law firms who sponsored holes and offered prizes to the golfers. Thanks also to the staff at Kingswood for making the tournament run smoothly. CEP and SBHAC invite everyone to return to next year’s tournament for continued success in the fight against Spina Bifida.

SBHAC works on behalf of people with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and their families. Spina bifida is a disability where the spine does not form completely and often leads to hydrocephalus, where the normal cerebral spinal fluid draining patterns in and around the brain and spinal cord are interrupted.

The CEP represents 160,000 Canadian workers, 5,000 of them in Manitoba in telecommunications, media, energy and printing. Employees and managers from workplaces such as MTS, FP Newspapers (Winnipeg Free Press and Brandon Sun), Datamark Systems, CHUM Radio, City TV, Naylor Publications, Manitoba Hydro (Natural Gas), Cascades Boxboard, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and of course law firms, donated time, prizes, money or played in the tournament.
