070426 - The British Columbia Teachers Federation found itself behind picket
lines this morning as the members of CEP Local 464 commenced strike
action.
“The Local Union tabled an offer at 1:12am addressing all outstanding
issues,” stated National Rep Dave Schaub. “These proposals were
rejected by the employer at approximately 1:45am. The employer
then left the table advising the Local Union that they would be
prepared to bargain a new labour agreement when we would agree to
address their concessions and contract strip.”
“This is a great example of irony,” said Anita Chapman, president of
Local 464. “In 2005 they fought the BC government over the issue of
concessions and with our help, they won. Now they are coming after
our collective agreement.”
The job action threatens the BCTF annual general meeting, which is
scheduled to begin May 4 in Vancouver. At the AGM, the federation will
elect a new president, as Jinny Sims will not be seeking re-election
after three years as leader of the BCTF.
Chapman continues, “It’s a shame that the woman who made political
and labour history by leading BC’s 41,000 teachers to an
unprecedented strike in 2005, will not leave a legacy of the wisdom
and determination that were the hallmarks of that dispute, but rather,
a legacy of the breakdown of fundamental union principles at the
BCTF.”
This is the first time that the members of Local 464 have taken strike
action against the employer.
