Press Release – February 7, 2008
Timber West sawmill in Campbell River, announce the permanent closure of the mill, effective May 9, 2008.
VANCOUVER –Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union members at the TimberWest sawmill in Campbell River, BC were shocked today to hear their employer announce the permanent closure of the mill, effective May 9, 2008.
“We are very disappointed that TimberWest feels that they must close the mill,” states CEP Local 1123 President Scott Doherty. “We understand the challenges of the coastal forest industry, but this is devastating news for our members and their families.”
“We will roll up our sleeves again to help find a positive solution to the announcement,” said Administrative Vice President Don Boucher. “CEP has a long history of finding solutions to mills in trouble and we will do it again.”
“On behalf of our membership we want to help find a long term solution to the challenges that this mill faces,” continues Doherty. “As the employer acknowledges, we have a dedicated workforce and we believe that we can be part of a solution that is in the best interest of our members, their families and the community.”
CEP also represents the unionized workers at the mill in Port Alice, where the mill is finally enjoying some economic stability. CEP Local 1123 represents over 800 workers in the Campbell River area, including 225 workers at TimberWest. The CEP represents 150,000 members coast to coast including 40,000 forest industry workers throughout Canada.
